George V nickel Pattern Shilling 1924 SP64 PCGS, Royal mint, S-4023 (for type), ESC-1433A (R4). A significant 20th century off-metal rarity, carefully preserved and pleasingly presented, with light golden tone over silky surfaces that show very few post-strike marks, and a long as-made lintmark that runs from the right of the N in OMN on the obverse, all the way to the back of George's neck. As one might expect from a striking in nickel for coin typically made in silver, the design lacks full definition at its highest points as a result of having been struck from presses that likely weren't specifically calibrated to handle this harder metal. Only the second example we have seen, and ideal as a companion piece in a world-class cabinet of shillings.
