Republic silver 1/4 Real 1843 Ca-RG MS62 NGC, Chihuahua mint, KM368. Attractively toned Mint State with essentially fully lustrous and comparatively unmarked surfaces for the designation. These charming Liberty Head cuartillas were struck in accordance with the decree of February 18, 1842 signed by General Santa Anna instructing the various mints to strike "1% of the silver that is minted in coins of 1/4 Real to the same standard as the ones struck under the Spanish Government". While other mints struck coins of this design as late as 1862 (Guadalajara and San Luis Potosi) or 1863 (Mexico and Durango), the Chihuahua mint only did so in 1843, thereby creating a one year-issue that is elusive in any grade. In lofty preservation such as the present coin, the issue becomes very rare and most desirable. Currently tied with a single other specimen as the highest certified by NGC and a superb representative of the type, among the very finest seen by the cataloger.

Estimate: 4000-5000 USD
