Republic 4 Reales 1827/6 Mo-JM XF45 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM375.6. Well preserved and decidedly choice for the designation, with highly lustrous fields and limited high-point friction evidence, albeit a tad weakly struck on the centers as are all of the few specimens examined. The very elusive first date of this scarce type, very rare in this unflawed and attractive quality. Contrarily to the extensive and continuous series of 8 Reales, the Mexico City mint only issued the 4 Reales denomination for a limited number of years and after an initial limited issue in 1827, coins of this denomination would not in fact be struck until 1850! As a result, the historically important first date is very scarce in any preservation and essentially unknown above Fine (the two other examples currently listed in NGC's census are a VG and a F coin). The present coin is the sole exception noted by the cataloguer and should strongly attract the specialist's attention as such. Ex. Stack's Bowers (3/2011, lot 8378 for $1,800)
