Joao III gold 500 Reais (1/2 Sao Vicente) ND (1555-57) AU53 NGC, Lisbon mint, from 10 June 1555, Fr-33, Gomes-180.01 (2013 ed). The first type in this issue, defined by "ИИ" in IOANNES without the reverse legend broken by Saint Vincent's halo. Portuguese gold issues of this period are often crude, and this example is no exception, although the strike is relatively even and centered and the preservation is well above-average. Ample residual luster accentuates a charming portrait of Saint Vincent in his role both as the Patron of Lisbon and, with a ship in his hand, of sailors.
