Maria I gold 1/2 Escudo (800 Reis) 1796-(L) AU58 NGC, Lisbon mint KM296, Fr-119. The final and scarcest date from this ephemeral three-year issue, with handsome, darkened patination and light wear across the high points. Some softness in the strike and a few obverse marks are noted in the grade assignment, but do little to detract from the overall appeal of this scarce piece, which is currently the only-known certified example of this date. A coin worthy of much attention, as well as a strong bid consideration.
