Nicholas I gold Medal "For Smallpox Vaccination" Instituted 1826, uncertified, by A. Lyalin, Diakov-464.4 (R3), Smirnov 429/c, 29mm, 19.54gm. Obv. Crowned and mantled bust of Catherine II right, By the Grace of God Catherine II Empress of all Russia around the periphery. Rev. A female figure surrounded by seven children, For Smallpox Vaccination around the periphery. The strike is quite bold, with reflective fields. The surfaces are lustrous, with moderate small contact marks on both the obverse and reverse. An extremely rare medal in gold. We can find no previous reference of sale, or auction, in this metal, and Diakov does not even have a picture of this piece in his wonderful catalog of Russian medals.
