Republic gold "Double Shaft" 1/2 Pond 1892 MS66 NGC, Berlin mint, KM9.1, Hern-Z38. An absolutely phenomenal example of this rare type. Ebullient luster is tempered ever-so-slightly by soft-reddish tone, lending a substantial air of originality to this specimen. Tied with one other example for the finest certified by either of the two major grading services, this piece features an exacting strike with needle-sharp details present on the bust of Kruger and particularly in the reverse arms unwittingly bungled by Otto Schultz as he prepared the dies for this inaugural ZAR issue for release just prior to the presidential elections in the South African Republic. His initials, OS, and his portrayal of a double-shafted wagon resulted both in political scandal for Kruger and a complete recoining of the 1892-dated series. While the "double shaft" variety is generally considered to be the only type for the date, we do note the sale of a "single shaft" issue, cataloged as unique, and selling in the April 1977 ( Lot 15) offering by Sotheby's in South Africa for 24,000 Rand, the highest price realized in this impressive South African sale. The Read Collection

Estimate: 20000-25000 USD
