Republic gold Pond 1896 MS62 NGC, Pretoria mint, KM10.2, Hern-Z49. Well-defined for this typically softly-struck issue, with frosty luster over orange-gold surfaces and only light marks that preclude a higher designation. A rare date at the Mint State grade, this being only the second we have sold at the tier, with the previous offering coming during our January 2011 New York International sale and bringing an impressive $23,000. This example, in the same grade at that piece, is similarly presented in terms of handling, but displays a stronger strike on the reverse eagle.The Read Collection
