Republic copper Pattern 4 Centesimos 1869-H MS63 NGC, La Rochelle mint, KM-PnA13. Choice Uncirculated with attractive surface quality for the designation and substantial hints of original red, particularly on the reverse. The pattern variety with no designer's ("TASSET") on the reverse, not to be confused with the usual Specimen strikings of the regular issue. Other distinguishing characteristics include the "R's" on the obverse legend with legs curling upward and a simpler "H" mintmark (faint on this example) without serifs. Missing in the otherwise remarkably complete group of patterns offered as part of the R. Almeida collection (Spink Zurich 10/1987) and extremely rare with only two other examples confirmed by the cataloguer: the SCWC plate coin – lot 1472 in the legendary Kagin's 8/1983 ANA Auction – and the example sold as lot 2293 in Spink Smythe's 10/2008 auction. As noted, an incredibly elusive pattern of the classic sunface copper Uruguay series, very desirable in this fine quality.
