PTOLEMAIC EGYPT. Ptolemy V - VIII (205-145 BC). AR didrachm (6.70 gm). Uncertain mint in Cyprus, dated CY year 117 (147/6 BC) Diademed bust of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; across field, date (P-IZ); between eagle's legs, E. Svoronos 1227. Nicely toned. Good Very Fine. See C. Lorber, "The Ptolemaic era coinage revisited," NC (2007), pp. 105–17, for an updated discussion of this enigmatic provincial Ptolemaic issue. Although this issue is traditionally assigned to Arados, Lorber argues for a Cypriot mint, and for a starting date of 262/1 BC for the civil era dated on the coins.
