Judea, Bar Kochba Revolt. Silver Zuz (3.3 g), 132-135 CE. Undated, attributed to year 3 (134/5 CE). 'Sim'on' in two lines within wreath of thin branches wreapped around eight almonds. Reverse: 'For the freedom of Jerusalem', fluted jug. Mildenberg 132 (O19/R92); TJC 284; Hendin 1428. Part of the legend of the underlying denarius of Nerva is clearly discernable on both sides. Choice Very Fine.

The silver coins struck by the Jewish mints during the Bar Kochba Revolt are invariably overstruck on earlier coins. On this coin, the crown, the back of the head, the laurel wreath ties, and the first part of the legend showing the undertype to be a coin of Nerva are all clearly visible on the obverse. The reverse has a small part of the design visible but obscure. However, the part of the legend that is visible shows that the reverse type to be Fortuna standing left.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
