P. Sepullius Macer. Denarius April-May 44, AR 4.00 g. Bearded and veiled head of M. Antony r.; behind, jug and below chin, lituus. Rev. P·SEPVLLIVS – MACER Horseman on horseback galloping r. wearing conical cap and holding whip in r. hand, a second horse by his side in background, wreath and palm branch behind. Babelon Sepullia 8 and Antonia 2. C 74. Sydenham 1077. Sear Imperators 142. RBW 1689. Crawford 480/22.
Very rare. A very elegant portrait of fine style and with a lovely tone.
Unobtrusive areas of weakness, otherwise extremely fine

Ex M&M 61, 1982, 388 and Hess-Divo 307, P.A. collection, 1535 sales.

This coin is very difficult to find in nice condition. This is a very fine example for the issue. MSG.

Macer had also issued coins with the portrait of Caesar. Here the obverse portrait of Antony, bearded and veiled is clearly portraying him in mourning over the loss of Julius Caesar. This is the first appearance of Antony on coinage. He would not be honored by the Rome mint again until after the formation of the second triumvirate. MSG.
