Asti became a French possession in 1389, as part of the dowry of Valentina Visconti when she married Louis of Valois, brother of Charles VI. They were the grandparents of Louis Duke of Orléans (Louis XII of France as of 1498). Thanks to this inheritance France had a perfect base for incursions into Italy: while the French were ultimately thrown out of Italy they were replaced by the Spanish (later the Austrians).
