CORINTHIA, Corinth. Circa 375-300 BC. Stater (Silver, 25mm, 8.60 g 3). Ϙ Pegasus flying left with pointed wing. Rev. Α Ρ Head of Aphrodite to left, wearing pearl necklace and Corinthian helmet with a leather neck guard with a mailed surface; behind head to right, Triton swimming to right, hurling thunderbolt. BCD 106 var. Calciati 438. Ravel 1020. A very attractive piece with an exceptional symbol and struck on a broad flan. Extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex Münzen & Medaillen Deutschland 12, 10 April 2003, 70 and Jean Elsen, FPL 71, September 1984, 16.

This piece has an unusually detailed portrait of Aphrodite: the stippling on her leather neck flap (attached to the inside of the back of her helmet) is a fascinating detail and must indicate a form of chain mail protective surface. The wonderful figure of the attacking Triton, which appears as a symbol, is equally remarkable.
