Abbasid, al-Abbas b. Amir al-Mu'minin, silver dirham, Armeniya 219h, wt. 2.81gms. (Album -; Verdanyan - cf. No 85 for issue in this name), unpublished, holed, about very fine, extremely rare Al-'Abbas hoped that he would be a caliph after his father's death. However, al-Ma'mun's decision was in favour of his own brother al-Mu'tasim billah. When al-Ma'mun died, al-'Abbas, who by that time was a governor of al-Jazira and Arminiya, refused to accept his uncle as new caliph. Following a period of instability al-'Abbas accepted his uncle's suzerainty over him and the conflict was resolved peacefully. Al-Mu'tasim became caliph in Rajab in 218h, and so this coin was probably struck in the very early part of 219h by the provincial administration who remained loyal to al-'Abbas. The somewhat crude style of inscriptions suggests a local minting of the coin. (£1250-1500)
