BRITISH COINS, Civil War Siege Coinage, Charles I, Obsidional Coinage, Pontefract besieged, Silver Shilling, 1648, issued after his execution in the name of Charles II, on octagonal shaped flan, castle gateway with flag at top P and C either side of flag, ground below, OBS to left, cannon to right, legend and date around CAROLVS SECVNDVS: 1648, rev C.R at centre, crown above, legend DVM: SPIRO. SPERO, outer beaded circle both sides, 4.49g (Brooker 1234; N 2648; S 3150). Well struck, almost extremely fine, toned and very pleasing, very rare, this is the earliest coin issued in the name of Charles II in very late 1648 in the old style dating.
