Abbasid, temp. al-Mamun (810-833), AV Dinar, reform type, 3.86g, Madinat al-Salam, AH210, double marginal legend on obverse (SICA. vol.3 1783 [Shamma 4458], Bernardi 116Jh; A.222A.2), a little surface damage, good fine and of the highest rarity.
The monetary reform of al-Ma'mun saw the introduction of a double marginal legend on the obverse of gold Dinars.Until recently it was thought that the mint name first appeared in the inner legend in AH212, although mintless coins with dates 206 - 211 are recorded. One other coin of this type is listed by Nicol in the Ashmolean collection, and this appears to be a die match. Neither coin has the appearance of a special issue or trial peice which would suggest that at the mint of Madinat al-Salam the practice of including both mint and date in the inscriptions commenced earlier than previously believed.
