Kent, Eadberht Praen (796-98), Penny, 1.20g, Three-line phase, 796-97, type I, Canterbury, Babba, ead / bearht / rex in three lines, each line divided by a pelleted bar, dispersed pellets in legend, rev. babba across field with solid bar above and ornamental bar below, uncial m and saltire with annulet centre in field, dispersed pellets (Naismith C4; N.202; S.875), a field find with crystalline deposit in legends, black tone and with some pitting, peripheral loss evident from 7 o'clock through 1 o'clock, legends fully readable and all other detail well evident, probably very fine and the coinage of Eadberht Praen very rare.
According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle Eadberht Praen 'the priest' was captured by Coenwulf of Mercia as a pretender to the throne. He was subsequently taken by shackle to Mercia, blinded and his hands were severed.
