Denmark, Cnut (1018-35), Penny, 1.06g, Quatrefoil type imitation, Huntingdon, Eadnoth, +arn+eltnovn, locally cut crowned bust left with sloping crown, a pellet either side in field, rev. +erÐnor mo hvn, long cross voided on quatrefoil with pellets on cusps, (SCBI 15 Copenhagen, No 4262-3; Hauberg 3 var; N.781 var; S.1157 var), hints of double-striking in remote areas and a lighter tone to the obverse but basically as struck with a pleasing naive style bust, nearly extremely fine and a most interesting issue of Cnut from his Scandinavian territories.
This Danish issue of Cnut is stylistically linked to an earlier striking with the legend CNVT REX DAENOR (Cnut, King of Denmark). Within the larger series Malmer notes in 'King Canute's Coinage in the Northern Countries' (UCL, 1972), p.15 that Huntingdon is a recognised English mint signature utilized in the imitative contemporary coinage of Denmark. It is highly likely that the model for this coin was a Huntingdon mint Quatrefoil type, moneyer Eadnoth with a 'Lincoln' style bust, c.f. SCBI 2 Glasgow, No 897 and SCBI 36 Berlin, No 610 - EADNOÐ MO HVN
