The Angevin party (1139-48), Penny, 0.90g, Anonymous issue in the name of King Henry I, west country mint, possibly Hereford, Willelm?, naive style bust right with broad double diadem in place of crown, sceptre before, legend beginning above fleur of sceptre, [h]enri[cvs rex], rev. wel[...], quadrilateral on cross fleury as Henry I Type XV (BMC 279; Mack BNJ 35 1966, no.253; cf Ruding Supp. II, pl II, 11; N.940/2; S.1329), a base and brittle piece as per normal for Angevin issues, unfortunately plough-damaged resulting in flan loss at 6 o'clock and flan split at 9 o'clock, whereas the piece is entirely attributable to the anonymous anarchical coinages, nearly very fine for issue, very rare and an issue which represents the zeitgeist of the period well.

This piece is an obverse die duplicate of the anonymous 'Henricus' penny in Spink sale 227, December 2014, lot 529. The cataloguer was able to discern in the reverse legend N : H and postulated the legend [o]n : h[eref?]. There are Anarchical issues of Hereford known in the name of Henry and with the quadrilateral on cross fleury reverse such as Mack 248-9. Mack 241 (also published in SCBI 30 America, No 801), however, is of crude BMC I style and signed WILLEL[M ON]: HEREFORD. The current piece with reverse legend WEL could well be a slightly blundered version of the same moneyer and when combined with the visible legend on lot 529 of the September 2014 sale one can postulate the legend WEL[LELM:O]N:H[ER...] or a version thereof. Once again we require futher specimens to elucidate matters on this mysterious issue.
