Constantine the Great (AD 307-337), AE Nummus (23.3 x 21.4 mm 4.55 g 6h), London mint, CONSTANTINVS P AVG, helmeted and decorated with a plain band rather than a laurel wreath, cuirassed bust of Constantine left, spear over right shoulder and shield on left, rev. COMITI AVG NN, Sol standing left, star in right field, PLN in exergue (RIC 177 var.; Huvelin 51 var.; CT 7.03.036 var.), extremely fine.
Ex Toone collection.
The martial busts of the right star series allude to Constantine's forthcoming military campaign against Maxentius. The helmeted types with a plain band are known from only a few examples and it is unclear what the reason is for this type of decoration. This coin is illustrated on the CT plate 7.03.036(2).
