PHOENICIA, Tyre. Elagabalus. AD 218-222. Æ (27mm, 16.48 g, 12h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Dionysus standing left, placing right hand on trophy and holding thyrsus in left; two captives at base of trophy, murex in central field, prow at foot of Cadmus, palm tree in right field. Rouvier 2366 var. (details of rev. type); BMC 406 var. (same); AUB –. VF, dark green patina, earthen highlights. Possibly an unpublished variant.

The Rouvier and British Museum specimens depict Dionysus holding a cantharus over a panther in his right hand, rather than placing it on the trophy. Additionally, the murex shell takes the place of the palm tree in the right field.
