City of Sebaste (Samaria) AE 27 mm struck year 187 C.E. under Commodus (Rosenberger 13) 11.39 g.
A large coin well centered and well detailed on both sides. It is definitely one of the finest I have seen for the type, if not the finest. Much better in hands than the pic.
It is fascinating that the actual statue of Kore, the deity depicted on the reverse of this coin, was found by archaeologists in a cistern of the stadium of Sebaste 80 years ago* (see illustration at right). This statue is visible at the Israel Museum.
* Excavations of 1931-1935, leaded by the Harvard University, the Hebrew University, the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem and the Palestine Exploration Fund.
