Herod Philip AE 23 mm struck year 8 C.E. in Caesarea Philippi (GBC 1221a) 7.64 g.
An extremely rare variety with a completely retrograde inscription on the reverse. On the obverse, the portrait and surrounding inscription are in a remarkable condition. If one except a few barbarous dies used for the two largest denominations of Mattatayah Antigonus, the retrograde inscription are not known on denominations larger than double prutot on Judaean-Biblical coins. This reverse die of Herod Philip is the single exception (interestingly, it is not a barbarous die). This coin is the finest specimen I have seen for the type, in a much better condition than the GBC (1221a) and TJC (97b) plate coins, and than the example offered at the Heritage-Shoshana auction in 2012 (#20125).
Est. 2,000-2,500
