Herod Philip AE 13 mm struck year 30 C.E. in Caesarea Philippi (GBC 1232) 1.52 g.
A fantastic example for this extremely rare coin type depicting the portrait of Herod Philip himself, as he was about 55 years old (see also our illustration in GBC p. 256)*. Of the 11 specimens recorded to date (http://www.menorahcoinproject.org/phi-03.htm), this piece is one of the 2-3 finest, as beautiful as the GBC and TJC plate coins and far above the Heritage-Shoshana example sold in 2012 (#20133). Interestingly, this coin type is contemporary to the time Jesus was preaching in the territories of Philip (Matthew 16:13). For more infos, read our article published in Israel Numismatic Research Vol. 6 (2011): Herod Philip: The First Jewish Portrait.
* This illustration was also published in Biblical Archaeology Review in 2010 (http://members.bib-arch.org/publication.asp?PubID=BSBA&Volume=36&Issue=2&ArticleID=17)
