BRITISH COINS, Tower mint, Shilling, Gp F, mm. triangle (over anchor, flukes to right on obv., over anchor flukes to right over tun on rev.), bust 5, large mark of value, pellet stops both sides, 5.99g/7h (Sharp F5/1; SCBI Brooker –; N 2230/1; S 2797). Better than fine but portrait weak, the reverse overmarks very rare £200-300

Multiple overmarks were not unusual on the coinage of James I, particularly on large gold coins. Three marks on this coin means that the die was in use for a least 14 months (before May 1638 to after July 1639) – an unusually long time for a die ostensibly being used to strike large quantities of coins
