ALBANIA. 5 Franga Ari, 1926-R. Rome Mint. NGC MS-66.
KM-8.1. No star below bust. Struck during the presidency period of Zog's reign prior to his self-declaration as king two years later in 1928. Only one example at this numerical grade with just two examples certified finer (both MS-67) at NGC and PCGS. The neck between the ear and lower right corner of the portrait is fresh and without any trace of contact let alone wear. This is the area on all Zog portrait coinage that picks-up the first signs of handling, something totally missing on the coin offered here. That alone would make this a highly prized example of the issue, but it's only one of the attributes making this such a sensational coin. The balance of the coin is equally as impressive, razor sharp details throughout with near flawless rims and edges. All of this information, however, is trivial minutia compared to the coloration of the coin. An absolutely spectacular display of blues, greens, lavender, and periwinkle tone that gives way to rose and apricot at the centers on both sides. Add in the pedigree and the coin offered here becomes an irresistible temptation for any specialist in Albanian or Romagnoli designed coinage from the Rome mint. NGC MS-66.
