CHILE. Peso Pattern Essai, 1851. NGC MS-61 BN.
37 mm. Maz-1382a; VG-3284. RARE. Essai in Bronze. Portrait of Liberty with laurels composed of cherubic looking babies. A wonderful design by Barre that was experimented with at length going as far back as 1848 at the Paris Mint, but never adopted for production coinage for France or any other country. A trace of deep red remains along the edges of the devices with generally smooth mark-free fields. A single minor tap at 5 o'clock on the obverse edge sets the limit for the grade. NGC MS-61 BN.
