COLOMBIA. 8 Escudos, 1785-NR JJ. Charles III (1759-88). NGC AU-53.
Fr-35; KM-50.1a. Struck the first year after Spain devalued the 8 Escudo via a slight weight reduction in coinage, a tell-tale sign of the impending collapse of the empire that unfolded in slow-motion over the course of subsequent decades. At first glance a coin not much different from its predecessors except for its magnificent state of preservation. Bright canary-yellow gold without a trace of tone, just a few breaks to the luster through the portrait that set the grade at just below mint state. A coin worthy of inclusion in the finest collection of Spanish colonial gold coinage from the era. NGC AU-53.

Estimate: $1500.00- $2000.00
