FRANCE. Ecu, 1711-D. Lyon Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC MS-63.
Droulers-450; Dav-1324; KM-386.4. The only mint state example seen by either PCGS or NGC. From late in his reign, a wonderful crown-size Ecu featuring the last Sun King portrait to grace the coinage of France. A very attractive 3-Crowns reverse type with fleur-de-lis within the angles. Mintage of 815,990 pieces with (according to Droulers) a significant portion of the specie coming from Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, who was in exile at the time while supporting France during the War of Spanish Succession. His allegiance was rewarded a few years later in 1713 at the Treaty of Utrecht when his French Allies ceded Luxembourg and Namur to him while restoring him to the Bavarian thrown. Light even tone with significant underlying luster powering through to the surface. A coin without equals, the expressive details of the portrait and sharp reverse imagery produce a coin worthy of the most sophisticated assemblage of French 18th century coinage. If this sounds like your collection, you will be well advised to enter a strong bid for this piece. NGC MS-63.
Estimate: $2000.00- $2500.00
