GERMANY. Saxony. Albertine Line. 2 Taler, 1657. Johann George II (1656-80). NGC AU-58.
Dav-7629 (LS-398); KM-460; Schnee-897. Impressive, housed in an extra-large holder to accommodate its immense size, it is the only the second example NGC has seen, with one finer (MS63). A large coin typically seen with considerable doubling or planchet defects, the example offered here is well preserved with clear legends and devices, and sporting flawless edges. Light transparent merlot colored tone adds some life and personality to the piece. A very regal looking Elector of Saxony mounted atop his horse, sword in hand. Johann George II was an adept statesman who successfully positioned Saxony such that the French and Austrians competed for influence. His real passion was for the arts, and the iconographic imagery displayed in this terrific looking Double-Taler fully reflects that proclivity. A coin that should attract considerable bidder interest. NGC AU-58.

Estimate: $3000.00- $4000.00
