GUATEMALA. 1894 1/2 Real Countermark on a Chile Peso (1884). NGC MS-63.
KM-216. Struck over an 1884-So Chile Peso, with both host coin and countermark grading a solid MS-63. During the ten years between being struck in Santiago and then countermarked in Guatemala, the host coin picked-up very light tone that would remain unnoticed in the absence of the brighter surfaces within the countermark. A jagged lightning bolt-like planchet crack can be seen to the right of the countermark on the obverse, presumably occurring in 1894, with some minor weakness on the reverse stamp allowing partial details of the underlying Chilean shield to show-through. Overall a terrific representation of the issue that is much less frequently encountered at this grade level than the similar Peruvian host coin issues. NGC MS-63.
Estimate: $500.00- $700.00
