ITALY. Cisalpine Republic. Scudo di Lire Sei (Scudo of 6 Lire), Year VIII (1800). NGC MS-64 PL.
C-2; Mont-184; Gig-1; MIR-477. The only example from either NGC or PCGS with the coveted PROOF-LIKE designation and highly desirable as such. Originally formed in 1797 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Cisalpine Republic was dissolved by conquering Russian and Austrian forces in April of 1799. Russian General Suvorov's occupation endured until May 30 of 1800 before he retreated on the eve of the Battle of Marengo, a battle which Napoleon convincingly won on June 14th several weeks later. Meanwhile, back in Milan, the French immediately restored the Cisalpine Republic on 15 Pratile, Anno VIII (June 4th of 1800) upon the departure of the Austrian and Russian occupying forces . Napoleon's First Consul appointed an "Extraordinary Commission of Government" Some 12 days later, on 27 Pratile, the date on the reverse of the coin presented here (June 16 of 1800), and at some subsequent time shortly thereafter, this commemorative was struck by the Milanese to express their gratitude for the French "liberation". Essentially a propaganda piece of stupefying proportions but with fabulous artistic qualities, the coin is an integral part of Northern Italian history from this era. Nearly all white, and highly reflective much as the proof-like designation would suggest, this Scudo is quite close to as-struck condition with just faintest trace of handling. The sensational degree of preservation of the coin combined with the great story behind the piece, produces a numismatic treasure that is sure to be the centerpiece of any collection of related material. NGC MS-64 PL.

Estimate: $5000.00- $7000.00
