ITALY. Papal States. Piastra (Scudo of 80 Bolognini), 1684. Innocent XI (1676-89). NGC AU-55.
KM-451.1; Dav-4093; Berman-2085. Canonized as a saint in 1956 by Pope Pius XII, Pope Innocent XI is regarded as one of the ablest and most successful Pontiffs to ever occupy the Vatican. A true conservative, he cut taxes and eliminated nepotism within the church which resulted in a significant budget surplus during his stewardship. The large silver coin offered here bears an expressive portrait of his simple dress, with plenty of remaining detail for the assigned grade. Lightly toned with a dash of color, an all around super example of the issue sure to please the collector who acquires it. NGC AU-55.
