MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1876-AsDL. NGC Fine Details--Chopmarked.
cf.DP-As15; KM-377. Hooked-6. VERY RARE. Unlisted variety and the first we have encountered. All other known examples are punched with an upside down "9" for the last digit in the date, here we have what is clearly a digit fully intended to be a "6" and with a "7" punched in the style of 1875. The coin is truly enigmatic on several levels, the first being the degree of die deterioration on the obverse, with surface die cracks severe enough to clearly indicate impending die failure. Close inspection does not reveal any evidence of the date being overpunched and the normal presumption would be that other examples of the type must have been made in order for the dies to have sustained such extensive damage. The only reasonable conclusion would be that this die, unique from all others used at the Alamos Mint that year, failed very soon after being put into production, with few (if any) other examples of the die variety having survived. A coin intended for the most advanced collection of Cap & Rays 8 Reales, and sure to add depth and meaning to the collection it enters. NGC Fine Details--Chopmarked.

Estimate: $400.00- $600.00
