PHILIPPINES. Japanese Occupation. Homma Medal Obverse Die Trial in Lead, 1942. VERY FINE.
49.39 x 52.75 mm; 72.91 gms. cf.Basso-150. By Clemente Zamora. VERY RARE. Of identical manufacture to the preceding lot save for some of the added stamps on the obverse. Struck with the same obverse die as the other example and with the date "1942" stamped below, however on this example the numerals are finer and done with different punches as well as being spaced more widely apart. It also lacks the "P.I." found on the other example. Above and to the right of the date is again some sort of privy mark but this one lacks an outer ring and has been marred by eleven tiny peck marks seemingly applied around the time it was made. In the northwest corner of the obverse is stamped a serial number "000136" which is done with punches differing from either of the other two date stamps. On the reverse we find an identical incised inscription as the preceding lot done in the same style and hand reading, "Trial/ Lead Plate/ C. Zamora/ 8-4-42/ Manila P. I." The trial bears a slightly more bold strike with some details in the leggings and distant hilltops being more defined. With only one contact mark notable in the fields, a minimal amount of metal deterioration can be noted on the high points of the obverse. The reverse shows some adhesive residue around the periphery where this piece was formally mounted in a display of some kind, again this is mentioned solely for accuracy with the residue's presence being insignificant. Another remarkable item sure to become a cornerstone to a collection from the era. VERY FINE.

From the Ray Czahor collection.

Estimate: $700.00- $1000.00
