PHILIPPINES. Japanese Occupation. Homma Medal in Silver with Loop, 1942. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.
35.58 mm (sans loop); 18.14 gms. Basso-150. Type I with plain edge and loop. By Clemente Zamora. Japanese soldier in combat gear facing away at center gazing at the island of Corregidor in distance with commemorative legend above; Reverse: Two palm tress with fronds at top, four stars at center and filling the fields is a poem which Basso credits General Homma with writing. As noted in Basso these medal were struck over small size Philippine Pesos although in this case the medal is slightly under weight which could simply be a consequence of the edges being shaved down to be made plain. Alternatively as this is a war time product which was possibly made while fighting was still active on the Bataan Peninsula and Corregidor the planchets on which these were struck may have been re-purposed from another source of similar size and weight to the circulating Pesos. Regardless this example bears a very solid strike, using dies SA(2) from the Czahor study, giving nice detail to the shallow obverse design and strong definition on the reverse. Even medium gray toning throughout with some lovely cobalt and rose highlights at the rim of the reverse. Some light rim bumps are present but they are the only evidence of handling with the fields being free of contact marks or extensive wear. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.

From the Ray Czahor collection.

Estimate: $350.00- $500.00
