PHILIPPINES. Japanese Occupation. Homma Medal in Silver with Loop, 1942. VERY FINE.
35.54 mm (sans loop); 20.20 gms. Basso-150. Type I with plain edge and loop. By Clemente Zamora. Japanese soldier in combat gear facing away at center gazing at the island of Corregidor in distance with commemorative legend above; Reverse: Two palm tress with fronds at top, four stars at center and filling the fields is a poem which Basso credits General Homma with writing. Struck with dies SB(1) from the Czahor survey. Most notable for its loop which is more of a barrel shape than others of the type as well as its weight being two grams heavier than others. Additionally there is some filling of the legend characters on the obverse and under magnification on the reverse some tiny pits and voids can be seen leading to the possibility that this is a contemporary recast. No contact marks of significance and minimal handling that seems more pronounced due to the low relief of the design. VERY FINE.
From the Ray Czahor collection.
Estimate: $350.00- $500.00
