PHILIPPINES. Japanese Occupation. Homma Medal in Silver, 1942. EXTREMELY FINE.
35.55 mm; 17.10 gms. Basso-150. Type I with plain edge. By Clemente Zamora. Japanese soldier in combat gear facing away at center gazing at the island of Corregidor in distance with commemorative legend above; Reverse: Two palm tress with fronds at top, four stars at center and filling the fields is a poem which Basso credits General Homma with writing. Struck with dies SB(4) from the Czahor survey. Plain edge but lacking any sign of a loop or any indication that one was ever applied. Additionally this piece is about a gram lighter than others of the type and the planchet itself is curious in that it varies slightly in thickness from one area of the rim to another. At certain spots on the rim there are traces of corded reeding which may have been effaced after minting. Excellent definition and detail of the design especially in the grass below the soldier, although the folds in his pants bear some differences to other examples. Surfaces a bit rough in fields and tops of characters, closer examination is recommended. Medium toning throughout without contact marks and only the most minimal signs of handling. Some specks of PVC in palm fronds noted for accuracy. EXTREMELY FINE.

From the Ray Czahor collection.

Estimate: $350.00- $500.00
