PHILIPPINES. Japanese Occupation. Homma Medal in Silver, 1942. EXTREMELY FINE.
39.09 mm; 19.88 gms. Basso-150. Type II with reeded edge and no loop. By Clemente Zamora. Japanese soldier in combat gear facing away at center gazing at the island of Corregidor in distance with commemorative legend above; Reverse: Two palm tress with fronds at top, four stars at center and filling the fields is a poem which Basso credits General Homma with writing. Clearly struck over a 1908-S Philippines Peso with portions of the undertype showing through including a full date. Struck with dies SB(7) from the Czahor survey which were slightly smaller than the under coin leaving a small rim below roughly three quarters of the medal proper. The reverse dies are rotated about ninety degrees. A dark waxy substance can be observed collected in the periphery devices, possibly old lacquer or simply an accumulation from time. Without any major contact marks or wear with just a touch of lightness to the central strike. Medium toning in fields. A prime example of the second type of these pieces mentioned by Basso. EXTREMELY FINE.

From the Ray Czahor collection.

Estimate: $700.00- $1000.00
