POLAND. Courland. Taler, 1780. Peter Biron (1769-95). NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines.
Kop-4104 (R2); HCz-341; Kal-300; Dav-1624; KM-32. Choice expressive portrait of Peter Biron, the last duke of Courland and Semigallia, and son of Ernst Johann Biron who was chief advisor and lover of Tsarina Anna of Russia. (Peter Biron ceded Courland to Russia in 1795.) Reverse depicts the conjoined oval arms of Poland and Lithuania, wreath-draped and framed, crown above. Last silver coin issued by Courland and quite SCARCE in any kind of decent condition. The coin offered here retains considerable detail with areas of original mint luster. The light cleaning as noted on the label does little to detract from the overall appeal of the piece. NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines.
