70.04 mm; 110.42 gms. By G. Devreese. Uniformed bust of General Gerard Leman facing three quarters left; Reverse: Body of soldier sprawled amongst debris of battle, "EPREUVE D'AUTEUR" in exergue. "FONSON & Cle" stamped on lower edge. Struck to honor General Leman who gave King Albert I his military training and prepared the defenses of Liege during WWI. After heavy siege from German artillery General Leman's command post at Fort de Loncin (the only one of the twelve forts ringing Liege not to surrender to German forces) fell with the General himself being knocked unconscious and captured by the Germans, spending the next three years as a prisoner of war. Attractive light toning giving some hints of rose coloring to the fields and some vibrant greens near rim. Few contact or handling marks throughout a very handsome and well preserved medal. UNCIRCULATED.
