FRANCE. Kings of France Bronze Medals, ca. 1840. EXTREMELY FINE.
51 mm. 16 pieces in lot. A group of medals from the set illustrating the Kings of France by Caque. Each with a portrait of the ruler on one side and biographical data on the reverse. This group of medals represents various French rulers from Merovee, the third French King to Louis XII, the 57th King. An additional medal by the same sculptor and of the same size and fabric, but of a somewhat different style, shows Charles X along with his biographical data. The portraits are of very high relief and are quite detailed. Many of these medals have a red residue, perhaps glue and/or crushed velvet from a case they were housed in, mainly on the edges, that is easily removed. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. Average condition EXTREMELY FINE.
From the Collections of The Strong, Rochester, New York; sold to benefit the museum's collections fund; originally collected by John Charles Woodbury (1859-1937).
