FRANCE. Burning of Reims Cathedral Silver Plaque, ND (ca. 1917). CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
60.01 x 80.40 mm; 214.00 gms. By L. Chavalliaud. Victory and Justice flying right in pursuit of dastardly Kaiser Wilhelm who retreats right from the burning Notre-Dame de Reims over prone wounded family while clutching a dagger and torch within his cloak, dates and start of Victor Hugo quote below; Reverse: Radiant Marianne looming over eastern sky filling the renewed center of Reims with light while in foreground a triumphant Gallic cock subdues a submitting prone German eagle, close of Victor Hugo quote below. "l'ARGENT" and cornucopia stamped in lower edge. A lovely propaganda piece struck after the shelling of Reims Cathedral by German artillery on 19th and 20th, 1914. This incident was used by Allied nations as a major show of German war atrocities in their propaganda as the cathedral was considered a jewel of Gothic architecture and of great historical importance. Showing some handling marks with shallow contact marks scattered, mostly confined to the reverse. Nice old toning giving good testament to the piece's age. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.

Estimate: $200.00- $300.00
