GERMANY. Besancon. Taler, 1664. NGC EF-40.
KM-48; Dav-5070. Located near the Swiss border and today a part of France, Besancon has played a pivotal role in many invasions and conquests over the centuries and has been alternately French, German, Austrian (Habsburg), and a free-city under Phillip II of Spain. Their right to strike coins ended a few years after this piece was struck in 1673, with all coins bearing the inscription CAROLVS QVINTA for Charles V, though he had abdicated more than a century earlier. In any case, a terrific example of the coinage from this cross-roads of Europe. Solid for the grade, fully original, and with pleasant lightly toned luster. NGC EF-40.
Estimate: $300.00- $400.00
