ITALY. Venice. Erotic Cast Bronze Medal, ca. 1535-45. EXTREMELY FINE.
46.20 mm; 69.83 gms. Attwood-406a. "D. PETRVS ARETIN. FLAGEL. PRINCIPVM" (The Divine Pietro Aretino, scourge of Princes) Bearded bust of Pietro facing right; Reverse: "TOTVS. IN. TOTO. ET. TOTVS. IN. QVALIB. PARTE." (Everything in everything and everything in every part) A satyr's head formed from male genitalia, facing left. This intriguing medal speaks to the philosophical doctrine that the soul is present within the whole body and therefore within every individual part of the body. The satyr's raison d'etre is his sexuality, and therefore his soul is present in his genitalia. EXTREMELY FINE.
From the Collections of The Strong, Rochester, New York; sold to benefit the museum's collections fund; originally collected by John Charles Woodbury (1859-1937).
Estimate: $100.00- $150.00
