MEXICO. Oaxaca. Copper Axe Head Money, ND (Pre-Columbian). EXTREMELY FINE.
Opitz-pg. 24/5. 9 pieces in lot. Aztec made and current money at the time of the Spanish conquest. Large broad head style pieces. Often found in bundles much like the group offered here. Dudley Easby, one time Consultative Chairman of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Primitive Art Department, surmised that the similarities between these Mexican Axe-Head Monies and nearly identical axe-heads found in Ecuador conclusively demonstrates the existence of trans-continental commerce prior to the arrival of the Spanish. Essentially as made with light green patination on several pieces and some light soil deposits. EXTREMELY FINE.
Estimate: $200.00- $300.00
