SPAIN. Spanish War Cross Breast Star, Class II, ND (Instituted 1936). CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.
66 mm. Vernon-313. Awarded to Spanish soldiers of the German Condor Legion and other supporters of Francisco Franco fighting communists under Nazi command on the German Eastern Front. Spain entered the Second World War as a neutral non-combatant, however Franco was determined to repay Hitler for his assistance in the Spanish Civil War while simultaneously not engaging Western Allies, hence the Blue Division (as they were known in Spain) only engaged in combat with communist (Soviet) adversaries. Eight point faceted silver star with a 50 mm gilt cross on a laurel wreath crossed by swords at its center. The arms of the cross each have a silver crown, lion or castle mounted near their tips. A central round medallion inscribed: "AL MERITO / EN CAMPANA" around the Spanish Arms with a pomegranate at the center. The reverse of the star bears one hinged and two fixed tunic pins and is unmarked, with no maker's name or hallmarks. Minor surface chip to the white enamel on the central medallion and a small repair to the blue, just after the O of MERITO, otherwise essentially as issued. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE.

Estimate: $250.00- $350.00
