MIXED LOTS. Renaissance Era Medals. VERY FINE.
4 pieces in lot. A grouping of old recasts and copies. Two are 36 mm cast brass medals of Wilhelm Loffelholz von Kolnberg (1501-1554) on his 40th Birthday in 1541. (Kress Collection -601). Bust on obverse, Arms on reverse. One with added loop and short length of chain. Also a 41 mm Henry IIII of France (King 1589-1601) cast brass medal for his entry into Paris in 1594. Bust, Reverse: City gate. This piece appears to be in gilted base metal. The final medal is of Alexander Farnese, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, on the fall of Antwerp in 1585 (Van Loon I P350-1). Bust of Farnese in ornate ruff, legend: "ALEXANDER FARNES:PAR:PLA.DVX.BELG:DVM:GVB" around; Reverse: Allegorical scene of Alexander the Great (with the features of Alexander Farnese) in a tent during the siege of Tyre being shown the way to victory by a satyr. 42.4 mm brass. The pieces are crudely cast yet intriguing. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. Average condition VERY FINE.

From the Collections of The Strong, Rochester, New York; sold to benefit the museum's collections fund; originally collected by John Charles Woodbury (1859-1937).

Estimate: $150.00- $200.00
