Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, Ptolemy II Philadelphos Æ27. Sicilian mint, probably Syracuse, under Hieron II, circa 265 BC. Laureate head of Zeus right / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; in left field, Galatian shield. Svoronos 610; SNG Copenhagen 114. 17.24g, 27mm, 12h.
Virtually as struck and Nearly Mint State.
Daniel Wolf and Catharine Lorber posited in their recent paper (Num. Chron. 171) at the Sicilian provenance of a class of Galatian shield bronzes purporting to be of Ptolemy II. Though the reasons why are still unclear, their analysis shows that a 'Western Greek' style different to those coins struck in Alexandria does exist, and that co-operation between the mint specialists of Alexandria and those of Hieron II must have existed.
